How to find a Farmer to refer

Finding the right farmers and making that first introduction is all about leveraging the unique "handshake" culture of the agricultural industry. Since you’ve spent years in the fields yourself, you know that farmers value straight talk and proven reliability over a flashy sales pitch.
Here is a guide you can share with your potential referrers to help them find leads and open the door effectively.

Some tips you can use

Former Employers

If you have worked in the USA before, your previous boss (or that boss’s neighbors) are the best place to start.

Equipment Dealers & Co-ops

People at local John Deere dealerships or grain elevators always know which farmers are struggling to find help or are planning to expand their operations

Social Media Communities

Join Facebook groups like "American Agriculture," "Custom Harvesters," or "USA Farming." Look for posts where farmers are complaining about labor shortages or asking about the H-2A process.

The Best Way to Introduce the Program

A "cold call" rarely works with a busy farmer. The introduction should feel like a peer-to-peer recommendation.
Here are two "scripts" your referrers can use:

Option 1

"Hey [Farmer's Name], I know you've been struggling to find reliable operators lately. I’m working with a group that specializes in bringing over highly skilled South African machinery operators through the H-2A program. They handle the heavy lifting of the paperwork and vetting. Would it be alright if I had them send you some info on how it works?"

Option 2

"Hi [Farmer's Name], I really enjoyed my time working for you. I’m now helping a professional association connect great US farmers with skilled workers from back home. They have a really streamlined H-2A process that takes the stress out of the seasonal rush. Can I pass your contact info to them for a quick chat?"

Golden Rules

  • Lead with the Labor, Not the Visa: Farmers don't want "a visa program"—they want a tractor driver who won't break the equipment. Focus on the quality of the workers first.
  • Ask Permission: Never refer a farmer without telling them first. A "warm" introduction where the farmer says "Sure, have them call me" is 10x more likely to result in that $500 payout.
  • Keep it Brief: Farmers are busy. The intro should take less than 60 seconds.
