Returning to South Africa each year is a wonderful reunion with my wife, family, and beloved dogs. However, it’s also a time of stress as I plan for the upcoming H2A season. Questions about new contracts, farmers, and finances swirl in my head, and I worry about having enough money to last until my return and cover next year’s flight.
This year in the USA was a refreshing change. I worked for an amazing company that treated me exceptionally well. Having my own apartment for the first time was incredible! Usually, we South Africans share accommodations, which can be challenging.
A highlight of the year was obtaining my CDL licence—a dream come true. For an H2A visa holder, a CDL is like winning the lottery. Many farmers seek out South Africans with CDLs, so it’s opened new opportunities.
Soon, I’ll be wrapping up my contract at the co-op and heading to Winston for another three months before returning home in December. I can’t wait to see my wife! It’s heartbreaking to realise I’ve only spent about a year with her in the past three.
My role at the co-op involved ensuring applicators had sufficient water and fertilizer. Despite the relentless rain, we successfully sprayed and fertilized the crops. I believe I performed well as a truck driver, and the farmers seemed pleased.
Compared to previous years, my hours were reduced, and my earnings fell short of expectations. It’s frustrating because you plan your finances based on your contract, but this year’s outcome was disappointing.
Overall, my South Dakota experience has been fantastic. I’ve made amazing friends, visited Mt. Rushmore, and enjoyed boating adventures. These experiences are priceless.
Money can’t buy happiness. It’s essential to make the most of every day, build new friendships, and enjoy life to the fullest.
A verse that has helped me this month is Psalm 68:3: “But let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; let them exceedingly rejoice.”
