As the winter chill settles in Wisconsin (a far cry from our South African Decembers!), I’m reflecting on my incredible 9-month journey on the H-2A visa program. It’s been an eye-opener, to say the least!
Scrolling through social media (TikTok, Facebook, Instagram), you might get a romanticized view of farm work in America – guys cruising on tractors, BBQs, and a seemingly idyllic experience. But the reality is, it’s a demanding job with long hours. You’re also in a new country and culture, which can bring periods of loneliness.
Helping South Africans Pursue the American Farm Dream
Over the past two years, many South Africans have reached out to me for help finding farm jobs in the US. My dream has always been to empower them with the information and tools to secure these opportunities and provide for their families. Initially, I offered advice through videos explaining the application process.
But here’s some exciting news! I’m now involved in a project called H2ABuddy.com, a platform designed to bridge the gap between South African workers and American farmers/agents. Here’s the deal:

● Obtaining my CDL (equivalent to South Africa’s Code 14): A valuable skill that increases your employability.
● Operating a Combine Harvester: An incredible opportunity to put my skills to use!
Tip: Operating vs. Driving Equipment
Farmers often emphasize the difference between driving and operating equipment. Saying you can drive a tractor doesn’t necessarily mean you can operate it effectively.
